Chapter 23

Blood Beneath the Moon.

The city slept beneath a ceiling of heavy, slow-drifting clouds.

An earlier downpour had left the asphalt slick and dark, turning the streets into a fractured mirror of neon signs and shimmering lights. In the distance, low thunder rumbled through the skyline—a faint, restless growl. Daniel stood on the apartment balcony, his palms resting flat against the cold iron railing.

Below, traffic crawled along the avenues at its usual midnight pace. The people down there moved through their ordinary, predictable lives, completely oblivious to the fact that monsters were gathering in the dark corners of their city to plan wars older than their entire civilization.

Behind him, the quiet hum of the apartment was abruptly broken as Angelina threw herself dramatically onto the couch.

"I’m just saying," she groaned, staring up at the ceiling, "if a group of ancient, centuries-old vampires invite you to a creepy midnight ritual, the baseline human response should automatically be no."

Eva didn't look up from her spot on the floor, her hands methodically wiping a fine layer of silver dust from the blade of her hunting knife. "You say that like we ever choose the safe option."

"That’s because we don’t." Angelina sat up, pointing an accusing finger at Daniel's back. "Because Dracula over there is a literal magnet for supernatural disasters."

Daniel didn’t turn around. "I’ve never liked castles."

Angelina blinked, letting her hand drop. "That’s what you took from that entire sentence?"

He didn’t reply, his eyes remained fixed on the hazy city lights, but his thoughts were centuries away.

The Blood Moon Ritual.

Even letting the words echo in his mind felt strange. It felt ancient, heavy, and incredibly dangerous.

The memories of those old nights came back to him with vivid clarity. Stone halls illuminated by the flickering, crimson glow of braziers. Great dynasties of predators kneeling beneath an open sky, the heavy, metallic scent of blood hanging so thick in the air it was almost suffocating. Back then, the clans weren't just hidden groups—they were massive empires hiding just beneath the surface of human civilization. Every elder commanded a legion. Every territory was drawn in blood.

Then Daniel happened.

His jaw tightened, a muscle leaping in his cheek.

"You’re thinking too loudly again," Eva said softly.

Daniel glanced over his shoulder.

She had stopped cleaning her knife and was watching him carefully. There was no fear in her eyes—just a quiet, grounding perception. Somehow, that made the weight of his thoughts even worse.

"I haven't agreed to go yet," he said, turning back to the railing.

Angelina let out a loud snort. "Oh, please. You’ve already decided."

Daniel raised an eyebrow, looking back at her.

"You get this specific, brooding lines-between-your-brows look whenever you’re about to do something reckless," she explained, gesturing to her own forehead.

"I always look like this."

"Which is honestly a tragedy for everyone involved," Angelina sighed, sinking back into the cushions.

Eva stood up, sheathing her knife, and walked over to the balcony door. "You don’t trust them," she said, her voice dropping to a quieter, more serious register.

"No."

"But you still think they’re right."

Daniel looked back out at the city, letting the silence stretch between them before he finally spoke. "Dranum is moving too fast."

The lingering humor drained from Angelina’s face instantly.

"He’s gathering resources," Daniel continued quietly, his eyes narrowing as a faint crimson spark flared in the dark. "Knowledge. Artifacts. Followers. He’s becoming bolder."

Angelina uncrossed her arms, leaning forward. "So, what does this vampire ritual actually give you?"

Daniel exhaled slowly, the breath ghosting in the cool night air. "Strength."

"Temporary?"

"No."

That word made both of them go entirely still.

Daniel finally stepped away from the railing and turned to face them fully. "The Blood Moon Ritual was created during the First Age of the clans. Older vampires would offer portions of their own blood willingly to strengthen the clan leader."

Eva’s brow furrowed. "That sounds incredibly dangerous."

"It was."

"Wait a second," Angelina interrupted, frowning. "Vampires willingly giving up their power to another vampire? That sounds completely insane."

"Not literally their power, just little fractions to strengthen the leade." Daniel corrected. “It required absolute trust.”

"Which, in our line of work, sounds even crazier."

The ghost of a faint, humorless smile touched Daniel’s lips before vanishing. "The ritual amplifies power, yes. But it also creates a tether."

Eva’s eyes sharpened. "What kind of tether?"

Daniel hesitated, the memory of the bond chilling his veins. "The blood carries tiny feelings of the donors.”

Neither of them spoke. Even Angelina looked a little unsettled, the gravity of the ancient magic finally sinking in.

"Plus, the older the vampire," Daniel continued quietly, "the more potent the essence within their blood."

"And Selene is old," Eva said.

Daniel gave her a pointed look. "She’s over six hundred years old."

Angelina nearly choked on her own breath. "She looks twenty-eight! What kind of skincare routine—"

"She’d probably kill you for saying that," Daniel murmured.

"She’d have to get in line."

Daniel let the banter drop, but Eva kept her eyes locked on him. She could see right through the deflection.

"You’ve done this before," Eva said. It wasn’t a question.

Daniel’s silence was all the confirmation she needed.

"When I ruled the clans," he admitted, his voice dropping to a soft, hollow register.

The room grew perfectly still again. It wasn't because of the admission itself, but the utter lack of arrogance or pride in his voice. There was only an immense, crushing exhaustion. He looked like a man remembering a version of himself he had spent lifetimes trying to bury.

Eva took a step closer, her voice incredibly gentle. "What are you afraid of, Daniel?"

Daniel met her gaze. For a fraction of a second, the centuries of weariness parted, and something ancient and terrifying moved behind his eyes. It wasn't fear of the vampires. It was the horror of self-recognition.

"I remember what I became after the last time I drank it."

That answer hung heavily in the air long after he turned and left the room.

The ritual site lay far outside the city limits.

They drove down fractured, ruined roads that had long been swallowed by the encroaching forest, until the last remnants of human civilization faded into the dense tree line behind them.

Angelina stared out the passenger side window, shifting uneasily in her seat. "I officially hate every single part of this."

Eva sat in the back, silent and watchful. Daniel drove without a word, his hands steady on the wheel, though his pulse was beginning to race.

Eventually, the thick canopy began to thin out, opening up into a massive, hidden clearing.

The ruins of an ancient civilization emerged from the dark. Giant stone structures stood cracked and broken beneath the moonlight, pillars rising from the earth like the skeletal remains of some forgotten empire. Thick vines crawled over the weather-worn marble, and shallow pools of rainwater caught the red-tinted light of the sky.

At the center of the ruins stood dozens of vampires, patiently waiting.

The moment Daniel cut the engine and stepped out into the cool night air, every single eye locked onto him.

The atmosphere shifted instantly. Eva felt the hairs on her arms stand up—it was a heavy, suffocating predatory tension. Some of the vampires stared at Daniel with deep caution; others sneered with undisguised hostility. A few simply looked at him with absolute terror.

Selene stood near the center of the gathering, dressed in flowing black silks that caught the wind, her silver jewelry glinting sharply under the moon.

"You came," she said softly as he approached.

Daniel stopped a few paces away. "I said I’d consider it."

"And yet, here you are."

Angelina subtly leaned her shoulder into Eva’s. "Why does this feel exactly like we just walked into a cult meeting?"

"Because we did," Eva murmured back.

A few nearby vampires snapped their heads toward them, their eyes flashing in the dark. Angelina gave a weak, awkward wave. "Hi guys."

Nobody waved back.

"Super friendly crowd," she muttered under her breath.

Selene ignored the distraction, her focus entirely consumed by Daniel. "The moon is reaching its apex. It’s time."

Daniel scanned the ruins, his gaze lingering on the faces in the crowd. There were far more vampires here than he had anticipated. And they weren't just newborns or foot soldiers. These were old ones. He could feel the dense, crushing weight of their aura pressing against his own.

Suddenly, a tall, ancient-looking vampire stepped out from the inner circle. His silver eyes were cold, fixing directly onto Daniel with lethal intensity.

"You should not stand among us again," the male vampire declared. His voice was a harsh, scraping echo that cut through the ruins.

A tense murmur rippled through the gathered crowd.

Selene let out a sharp, warning sigh. "Cassian—"

"He destroyed the clans!" Cassian interrupted coldly, taking another step forward. "He slaughtered our elders. He burned our sanctuaries to ash." His gaze hardened into ice. "And now we welcome him back like a savior?"

Daniel’s expression didn't change. He stood perfectly still, his face an unreadable mask. "I didn’t come here asking for your forgiveness, Cassian."

Cassian’s eyes narrowed into slits. "No," he said softly, his voice dripping with venom. "You came because you finally found something stronger than you are."

The air grew so tight it felt impossible to breathe. Eva instantly shifted closer to him, placing herself a half-step closer to Daniel's flank.

The ancient vampire noticed the movement. A cruel, amused smirk flickered across his pale face. "Look at this. A wolf, defending the very monster who butchered her own kind once upon a time."

Daniel's eyes snapped fully crimson.

The ambient temperature around them plummeted instantly, their breath turning to sudden fog.

"Careful," Daniel whispered.

The word was entirely devoid of anger. It was cool, quiet, and absolutely terrifying.

Every single vampire in the ruins froze. Even Angelina took a step back, the sheer primal danger radiating from Daniel making her instinctually want to hide. It was the exact tone Daniel had used centuries ago—right before entire vampire courts were erased from existence.

Cassian stared at him, his smirk dying on his lips. For several agonizing seconds, he held Daniel's gaze before slowly, deliberately backing down.

Selene clapped her hands together once, the sharp sound breaking the spell. "Enough. The moon is rising."

Everyone looked up.

Above them, the heavy clouds parted completely, revealing the moon in all its eerie glory. It wasn't fully crimson yet, but a deep, bloody hue was bleeding across its surface. The Blood Moon.

A low, reverent murmur washed over the vampires. Some bowed their heads; others closed their eyes to feel the shift in the air.

Daniel felt it deep in his bones. An ancient, predatory instinct stirred violently beneath his skin, waking up from a centuries-old slumber. His hunger sharpened to a razor's edge. His senses expanded exponentially—suddenly, he could hear the rhythmic thumping of dozens of hearts, the rushing of blood through veins, the shallow breathing of every creature in the ruins.

Eva watched him, her eyes wide. His entire posture had changed. He was completely still now, but it was the stillness of a predator right before the strike.

Selene approached him, carrying a massive, ancient silver bowl etched with archaic vampire runes. "The rite is simple," she whispered.

One by one, the oldest vampires stepped forward. Each took a silver dagger, slicing open their palms without a sound, letting the thick, dark blood pour into the bowl.

The scent hit Daniel like a physical blow. It was old, intoxicating, powerful blood. The hunger inside him twisted into a violent knot, begging him to take it.

Angelina grimaced, covering her nose. "Ugh, that smells... wrong. Like copper and old dirt."

Eva glanced at her, stunned. "You can smell it from here?"

"Oh yeah. Big time."

Daniel didn’t hear them. Something entirely unexpected was happening within him. As more blood pooled into the silver basin, a sudden, unnatural warmth began to spread through his own veins.

No, it wasn't just warmth. It was a violent reaction.

Deep beneath his dominant vampire nature, his dormant werewolf blood was violently rejecting and thrashing against the influx of pure vampire essence. The internal collision hit him so hard his jaw clamped shut to suppress a groan.

Selene noticed the subtle tremor in his hands, a spark of fascination entering her eyes.

The bowl was finally brought before him, the liquid inside reflecting the deep crimson of the moon above. Selene held it up with steady hands. "Once you drink," she murmured, "the blood will recognize you as its master once more."

Daniel stared down into the swirling red reflection.

The memories flooded back in an unstoppable torrent. The wars. The fire. The screams of the dying. The heavy weight of a throne built on corpses. He had spent centuries trying to run away from that monster, trying to find a shred of humanity. Now, he was one swallow away from diving right back into the abyss.

Eva moved up right beside him, her shoulder brushing his. "You don’t have to do this alone," she said softly.

Daniel looked at her. For a single, fleeting second, the maddening hunger in his mind quieted down. Just enough for him to find his grip.

He took the bowl from Selene.

The entire ruin fell into a deathly, suffocating silence.

Daniel raised the silver basin to his lips. And drank.

The reaction was instantaneous and violent.

An explosion of pure, unadulterated power tore through his body. The ancient stone floor beneath his boots violently cracked, spiderwebbing outward, and a sudden, fierce gale of wind blasted across the ruins, forcing the younger vampires to stumble backward to keep their footing.

Daniel’s eyes snapped open, blazing a blinding, brilliant crimson.

Then, right beneath the red, a flash of pure gold flickered.

Wolf eyes.

Every single elder froze in absolute horror. Selene’s composed expression shattered instantly, Cassian stepped back, his mouth slightly open in utter disbelief.

Daniel nearly dropped the bowl, his hands shaking violently as the power surged a second time. The ancient vampire essence flooded his veins, but deep down in the dark, forgotten corners of his soul, something else answered the call. Something buried. Something that had been sleeping for a thousand years.

And for the first time in his entire existence—

Daniel heard a wolf growl inside his own mind.
